Hi!
I’m a queer artist based in Melbourne, Jesse S K Williams is my name but you can call me Jess.
I’ve been tinkering in Photoshop since the Howard government, and have developed a skillset useful for making unreal things look convincing and surreal things look pretty.
I’m a recovering photographer, working with both digital and analogue formats; in fact almost all of the photos I use to create my artworks are my own.
I do have a degree, but it’s in professional writing and editing – from RMIT. Despite a love for the written word and many hours spent napping in the Carlton library on Cardigan Street, my self-taught arsenal has turned out to be more lucrative, so here I am.
I write too; plays, unfinished manuscripts, TTRPGs, the works. None of that is on this site just yet, but it’s coming. Just as soon as I develop the self confidence to upload it.
My inspirations come from science fiction, fantasy, and everyday people and my relationships with them. The primary launcher in my mental pinball machine is dreams, which tends to lead my work in a surreal direction.
If the natural world were a TV show, I’d say I’m emotionally invested in all the characters, and hope above all that everything turns out okay for them. I stan all the creatures that walk, jump and swim on this pale blue dot, even the ones that scare the ever living crap out of me. As such, I’ve dedicated much of my time and a portion of this site to documenting them. I live for the days when the pair of adolescent currawongs who learnt to fly in the paperbark outside my study window return home to hang out and feed.
The purpose of this site is to give my works a home, and impress potential employers – so if that’s you, hey, I like your shoes. They’re sick.
I live in a real house (I swear) on Wurundjeri land, which was never rightfully ceded to the British Empire, and is currently occupied by the Commonwealth of Australia.
In case your curiosity was ignited by the not-so-subtle Q-bomb I dropped at the top of this letter, my queerness is of the gender variety.
Enjoy my works, and I hope the voice in your head’s impression of me is a flattering one.
Peace among worlds.
Jess x
